Ewen Spencer - Englands Dreaming

Ewen Spencer has always had a facination with youth and street culture. At his recent gallery in Leeds he showed his work in an exhibition called ‘England’s Dreaming’ featuring images from all over england.

This gallery featured a lot of interesting work having reoccuring themes of sex, dating, underage drinking and drugs, living conditions and social life for teenagers in our country.

His work isnt something I would usually look out for often finding flash photography to look tacky and similar to that of a handheld camera you would take to a party. With the style of work he does he somehow seems to make it work.Using flash photography gives the art a really harsh looking light which suits the harsh and slightly disturbing subject. None of his photos look pretty however the realism and accuracy of the situation is more overpowering in itself.

My favourite image is of  a girl who is clearly intoxicated on some thing or another, her mascara is smudged and her bra strap has fallen over her shoulder. People would consider this normal as she is obviously unaware of what is going on around her.Despite the situation and facial expression the girl looks very beautiful.
